Sight Casting on the Flats

Sight casting is hunting: you find the fish first, then make one good cast. On the shallow flats it is the most visual, most technical way to fish, because a fish you can see is a fish that can see you, and boat position, a quiet approach, and an accurate presentation decide everything. William Toney poles the Homosassa flats for redfish in summer heat and winter cold, Ruben Lee sight casts black drum in the skinny water of the upper Keys, and the tarpon migration along the Gulf Coast rewards the same discipline on much bigger fish.
