About Instructor
Ask Mike Hennessy what he does and he will tell you he is basically a fly fishing guide. That undersells it by a mile. Hennessy is a tournament captain who has landed a 1,245-pound blue marlin off Oahu and won the 2010 Bisbee's Black and Blue, and he is also a flats guide poling for the biggest bonefish in the world. Offshore or on the fly, freshwater trout or giant trevally, he fishes all of it at a high level. As he puts it, if it swims, he is going for it. Seth Horne has fished alongside him in Costa Rica for more than twenty years and has watched him back that up.
Hennessy does not sit still. He moves between Oahu, Costa Rica, and Fiji on a regular basis, and fishes California and Alaska on top of that. On the Hawaiian flats he guides clients to trophy bonefish on fly, running a 16-foot Action Craft Tournament Series skiff and a Hells Bay flats boat that float over water less than seven inches deep, which is what it takes to reach Hawaii's largest and most technical o'io. He considers the Hawaiian bonefish the most challenging fish there is, and he ties his own progressive patterns for bonefish, tarpon, and permit under the Cognac Flies name. He also works with the O'io Tagging Program to study resident bonefish movements and support sustainable management of the islands' marine resources.
The offshore fire has not gone out. Hennessy still stalks blue marlin and yellowfin tuna and is hunting a double grander he calls Tutu. In Costa Rica's southern zone he owns Encanta La Vida Lodge and runs Colio Sportfishing. In Fiji he serves as COO and global fishing host at Namotu Island Resort. He guides giant trevally and triggerfish in Hawaii and on Christmas Island as well, chasing whatever the location does best in its prime season.
His credentials match the resume. Hennessy holds a 100 Ton USCG Captain's License, is an IGFA Certified Captain, and has been featured on the Outdoor Channel and in Flyfisher, Center Console, Saltwater, Marlin, and the IGFA world record book. He fishes on pro staff for Pelagic Gear, Daiwa USA, and Hatch Outdoors.
In his In The Spread videos, Hennessy teaches the decisions behind all of it: rigging yellowfin baits for schoolies through giants, working teasers to pull blue marlin from beyond lure range, choosing baits and tackle for world-class roosterfish off the Osa Peninsula, and the structure fundamentals that hold true whether you are on a seamount or a bonefish flat. Learn from him and you come away a more complete angler.
