Description / Review / Instructor

Musky fishing expert Cory Allen dives into deep water with his latest product review. Well known for his mind boggling analysis of all things musky fishing, Cory serves up another heady dissection of one amazing musky fishing rod. There are a lot of musky fishing rods out there. Like...a lot of musky fishing rods now. Where once only a few major manufacturers existed without contestant, now many newer names enter the thrall and throw down a gauntlet against even the former giants of yore. While many are essentially six and one half dozen or in essence entirely inferior, some do offer distinct advantages. One such manufacturer is Vexan, an up and coming name in the competitive bass and walleye world that even makes rods especially for tackling alligators (yes actual adult alligators) by rod and reel. Their line of musky sticks is not to be besmirched, granting its backbone and variety of actions from saltwater tech being based out of Florida, which is literally surrounded by salt and inundated by fresh. Offering backbones as stout as a diplodocus femur, and nearly as long, to more supple lighter action models, their musky casting quotient lends itself to all the usual standard top rope elbow drop presentations of pounders and brobdingnagian bait bombs to the lighter action "spring flingers" for rattletraps and twitch baits. With a consistent load throughout the rod appropriately appropriated for each specific action and length, much attentiveness was given to the behavior of each blank. While there might not be 31 different flavors (for musky anyway), you don't even need that many and there isn't any redundancy to the models. "tHiS oNe Is FoR tHrOwInG tWiTcH bAiTs InTo WeEdS wItH hUmIdItY oF mOrE tH-...". Nope. Specific but not tediously so. You won't find yourself with a rod for every bait category really don't need that. Just as much as (some) baits are meant to catch fishermen not fish, some of the rods for said baits are meant to do the same. Essentially, if you want my advice, anytime you see a rod "specifically designed for throwing" (blank), just smile and nod, and then run the other direction back towards sweet sweet pragmatism. Vexan offers nothing less than that and a lot more in the quality and customer service department than many manufacturers who do try to justify the specificities to the consumer. It can't go without mentioning that now they are one of the first rod manufacturers that has incorporated the REVO reel seat into their blanks. Originally an attaché to a normal rod, the fore grip augmentation originally intended for easing the strain of jigging has been streamlined into an integrated and interchangeable system with different size and shape grips into the real seat itself. This especially lends itself to musky fishing and being able to switch them on the fly makes for not just a very high quality rod but a much more versatile one than originally without this incorporation. There's a grip for pitching, for locking and loading baits like a trebuchet, and yes, even an oversized one for extended jigging.
