MirrOlure Provoker for Fall Speckled Trout

One of my go to baits for Fall trout fishing on the Nature Coast is the MirrOlure Provoker. It's a hearty 5" soft plastic bait that is scented. It can be fished weedless, with a jig head and under a cork. The many acres of flats with hard bottom and rock grass are the places to target big trout. Around 3 foot is the best depth and a little breeze and outgoing tide helps. Two of the best colors that are working for me are watermelon red flake and gold body /red back. Any given day though the color can change so I also keep bourbon and glow. I like to rig mine with a popping cork with the bait about 20" underneath on a 1/8th red jig head. Make a long cast ahead of the boat and give the cork a good pop and pause retrieve. Most of the strikes with be when the bait falls beneath the cork. Good luck and good fishing. Stay tuned up with In The Spread.

The best time to fish? A nice two or three day warming trend always helps. Fishing pre front conditions and moon phases can also increase you odds. If I'm fishing post cold front conditions I usually go up in the "skinny" on the Collins river.

Jigging for Muskie | Clear Skinny Water | Dwayne Hickey

I've learned over the years that muskie fishing can be challenging when your dealing with clear, skinny water. At times you can see the fish lying along side a weed bed or if the water is super clear muskies can be spotted in ten feet of water. The upper half of the Collins river has plenty of weed beds, gravel bars and slick limestone bottoms. These are the times when sight fishing and the "cat & mouse game come in to play. I make sure to have hooks on the lures for this cat & mouse game. Polarized sunglasses are a must!

Musky Lures | Bottom Contact | Tick, Tick, Boom

When all else fails, and you know fish are present...make it known that you are, too. It was paramount in many of the teachings of Buck Perry to make bottom contact when fishing. Granted much of this was centered firmly around bass fishing, and while it isn’t entirely canon, many other species suspend far more than largemouth bass, and thus bottom bouncing might be a misappropriation of depth control.
